Anstey Gala
Both Paul and Deborah wanted to thank the Gala Committee for all their hard work in organising this year’s gala. It was a beautiful day, slightly too hot for the dog show, but it was great to see so many families enjoying themselves.
We think the resurrected Barrow Race was very well received! And what a treat to see the old John Bull bus there offering rides for people. We were lucky enough to snap a photo on the bus before its first trip and it was great to welcome our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Peter Bedford to Anstey to enjoy his first Gala.
New Mid Leicestershire Constituency
Following a review completed by the Boundary Commission for England, the Charnwood Constituency will be abolished, and we will move into a new Constituency named Mid Leicestershire. This will happen when the next General Election is called at some point over the next year or so.
This new Constituency will be made up of mainly the current Charnwood area but will include new areas from Blaby and Hinckley and Bosworth.

Planning Application
Councillors of the Planning Committee at Charnwood Borough Council agreed with us regarding a planning application for 20 houses on Gynsill Lane at the meeting held on 17th August 2023.
We have consistently campaigned for a safe pedestrian crossing on Gynsill Lane for the past years. 40 houses have already been approved in this location, and now there is a proposal for an additional 20 houses.
We are concerned that this area poses a risk to both pedestrians and vehicles.
Charnwood Borough Council's plans committee said Gynsill Lane needs a pedestrian crossing or it will be 'dangerous' for new residents. The decision on the 20 homes between Anstey and Glenfield was postponed after the Plans Committee described a main road leading to the site as ‘dangerous without a light-controlled crossing’.
The first phase of 40 homes was approved by Charnwood Borough Council’s Plans Committee in December 2022, with members voting to include a recommendation to the developer that it builds a new crossing after we described the road as ‘a death waiting to happen’.
The application went back to the Plans Committee on 21st September, with the same recommendations that a pedestrian crossing is not needed in this area.
The decision on 21st September, after much debate, was that the application was approved by the committee.
Police and Crime Commissioner
Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Rupert Matthews is inviting charities and community groups to bid for funding to help prevent crime and increase public safety.
Applications have opened for the Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland PCC's second Commissioner's Community Safety Fund round of 2023-2024. A further round will open in December. The PCC has promised to invest up to £400k to help community-based projects and services tackle crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) to help the delivery of his Police and Crime Plan.
Grants of up to £10,000 are available for projects designed to protect the public from harm, stop reoffending and protect people from being exploited or drawn into crime.
Grants are also available for projects that support any of the priorities of the Police and Crime Plan including the delivery of new provision or expanding existing provision.
For more information or to apply visit: https://www.leics.pcc.police.uk/CSF-2023-2024/
The closing date to apply for this round of funding is 2nd October 2023.
Camera trial – Littering
A camera that uses artificial intelligence to capture people littering from vehicles is being trialled in Loughborough. Charnwood Borough Council will be piloting the LitterCam technology on Warwick Way over a 12-week period.
Vehicle owners could be fined £150 if the cameras catch litter being thrown from the vehicle. New laws introduced in 2018 mean registered keepers are held responsible and may be fined or prosecuted.
The camera will automatically detect rubbish being thrown from a vehicle and could include litter such as cigarette ends, coffee cups, drinks cans, and food packaging.
If the offence is caught on the camera, an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera will record the vehicle’s number plate. The footage will be verified by the Council before being sent to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
Details of the registered keeper will then be shared with the Council so that a fixed penalty notice can be issued in the post.
The trial will be reviewed at the halfway point when the camera may be relocated to a different area. We hope that if the trial is successful the scheme may be expanded to include some of the villages that suffer from litter being thrown from vehicles.
