Anstey Village Update - December 2020
This is our final report before Christmas. We think most people will agree that 2020 has been an annus horribilis (that is, a disastrous year, as the Queen famously called 1992) for all worldwide and not just in Anstey of course. It has been so hard for so many people and we mourn the people who have lost their lives to this awful virus. There have been families torn apart this year, not only as a direct result of contracting the virus, but from other illnesses, accidents and wars. Families have not been able to see each other for months, cuddle new babies or hold the hands of their elderly family members. We know this Christmas will be different for many of us and some people will feel isolated and lonely. We are doing all we can to support the most vulnerable in the village but if anyone needs any help, please do get in touch with either of us.
Thank you to all residents who supported us during the past year. It’s a shame that we haven’t been able to get out and about in the community and meet as many of you as we would like to have.
We would also like to thank the team at Your Local for their continuous support in printing these reports for us, allowing us to share important and useful information to you, ‘our local’ community (see what we did there!).
Planning
Groby Road
Davidsons and Pegasus Group have contacted residents regarding proposals for further development on Groby Road. A representative from Pegasus Group also attended the Parish Council meeting held on 3rd November to explain their proposals further and take questions. These are just proposals at this stage and no planning application has been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council yet. The developers have set up a website where residents can submit comments and find out more information. Please follow this link to give your views: www.grobyroad-anstey.co.uk.
Martin High School
The Martin High School have submitted a planning application to Charnwood Borough Council for the ‘Erection of a new Sports Hall Building (to include Main Sports Hall, 2 x Changing rooms, a Classroom, Community lounge, Staff Office, Staff changing, general use toilet facilities, Kitchen, Reception and Plant room) and associated development’. The comments are now closed but if you would like to view the application, please visit the Council’s Planning Portal here: https://portal.charnwood.gov.uk/Northgate/PlanningExplorerAA/Home.aspx (use reference number: P/20/1642/2).
Christmas Day in Anstey and Surrounding Villages
Many of our readers will know that for many years Kerry and her team have been providing an amazing Christmas Day experience for residents of Anstey and surrounding villages who are alone at Christmas. Because of Covid-19, this will not be possible this year so please see below how you can still help our senior residents this Christmas.
Crime Figures
The most recent crime figures for Charnwood have been published and we thought we would share them with you, including some figures for Anstey. Overall crime in Charnwood has seen a continued reduction over the last 18 months. This is due to the hard work of our local police team in partnership with the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership (CSP), see Table 1.
Table 1: Charnwood Crime Figures for Years 2019-2020
Crime Type
Performance to date (variance 2020 compared with 2019) %
Total Crime as at 30th September 2020
Total Crime as at 30th September 2019
During Quarter 1 and Quarter 2, the CSP has delivered a return of:
- -30% reduction in Burglary – Residential (125 fewer offences)
- -20% reduction in Burglary – Business and Community (22 fewer offences)
- -32% reduction in Theft of Vehicles (57 fewer offences)
- -32% reduction in Theft from Motor Vehicle (148 fewer offences)
- -28% reduction in Cycle Theft (34 fewer offences)
- -30% reduction in Shoplifting (125 fewer offences).
Some of this reduction is due to the lockdown and people remaining at home. However, further work will be required to address an increase in:
- Violence against the person with Injury: +59% (291 additional offences)
This is a key target for the partnership for the next quarter.
Updates
Bradgate Park Parking Restrictions
A public consultation will be launched on 26th November with proposals to bring in more on street parking restrictions around the three Bradgate Park car park entrances. Part of the proposals include some of Bradgate Road within Anstey. The proposals are to install some double yellow lines on both sides of Bradgate Road, from the boundary of Anstey with Newtown Linford down to the junction with Long Close. There is a concern that if the proposals restrict on street parking in Newtown Linford, cars will simply park closer to Anstey, causing problems for Anstey residents, particularly those on Long Close and the adjacent streets around it. Please take the time to respond to this consultation whether in support or to object. All the details will be on the County Council’s website from 26th November. The link can be found here: https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-your-say/current-consultations
Cropston Road Crossing
A meeting was held with the County Council’s highways department on Wednesday 18th November. Some actions were agreed at that meeting regarding the Cropston Road crossing and a more detailed report is included within Cllr. Taylor’s County Council Report.
We would like to wish you all a very Happy Xmas and may 2021 be an annus mirabilis (that is, a remarkable and auspicious year!).
