Member Grants
We mentioned last month in our report about the grants available from Charnwood Borough Council, including our member grants for Anstey. Both Paul and Deborah were delighted to award £250 each to the Anstey Chess Club, to pay for some much-needed new equipment. Once the new equipment had arrived, we were invited by the President of the club, Ben Vaughan, to the club to see the equipment and have a game of chess. Deborah agreed and enjoyed a 40-minute game with one of the club’s youngest players, Marcus (aged 9). Deborah was checkmated by Marcus with some great play!
The Chess club are always after new members, so no matter what your ability level is or what age you are, please contact Ben for a chat on via email or telephone or visit the website. Details are here:

Mayoral
In the final month, April/May has been a busy one for the Mayor and Mayoress. They attended the following events:
- A dinner dance for the Thurmaston Twinning Association, where the Mayor delivered his speech in both French and English. "Très bon", I hear you say.
- The Dr Ian Keil Lecture from the Loughborough Archaeological and Historical Society on Mary Queen of Scots, delivered by TV's Prof Kate Williams, at All Saints Church, in Loughborough. What a treat and what a font of knowledge Prof Kate is on her topic!
- The Chairman's Reception at Syston Town Council.
- The BAPS Inspired Living celebrations, to celebrate the birth of Hindu guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj, whose wise mantra is 'in others' happiness, lies our own'.
- The Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. It rained heavily but we enjoyed the day, the pomp, the ceremony, and the fancy sandwiches and afternoon tea, all the same.
- Afternoon musical tea at the Loughborough Lions. Great nostalgic tunes, shame about the Mayor's dancing ability!
- All Saints Church 'Concert for Ukraine' where Rev. Wendy Dalrymple and her able team organised around 100 performers for our musical delight. Donations went to DEC Ukraine as did the Mayor's winnings from his bet on Ukraine winning the Eurovision Song Contest. You can watch the concert and for details of how to give, click here: https://youtu.be/BBXjksobjCE
- Lark Rise and beyond event for Rainbow's Hospice for children and young people.
- My own Civic Service at All Saints Church, hosted by Rev Wendy Dalrymple and the Bishop of Loughborough, Rev. Malayil Lukose Varghese Muthalaly, known as Bishop Saju. A collection was also taken for the Mayor's Charity, Living Without Abuse. If you want to take this final opportunity to give, please click here: https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/currentcharityappeal
The Mayor also attended his final Citizen's Advice Bureau board meeting and the Paralympic Festival by Leics & Rutland Schools Association at Loughborough University. It was great to see so many extraordinary young people competing.
If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help.
