Charnwood Council Meeting
At the council meeting held on Monday 15th November, the Labour/Green coalition running the council voted for changes to the Constitution to silence the voice of residents & members.
They voted to reduce the time speakers can talk at the Plans Committee, handed power to the Chair of the Plans Committee to decide what planning applications can be added to the agenda & failed to address the issue with single-member wards.
The Conservative Group submitted three amendments but all three were voted down by the coalition. A very sad night for residents of Charnwood who have now been effectively silenced by the undemocratic coalition who are working for themselves and not for our residents.
The Conservative Group at Charnwood Borough Council issued a press release following the meeting and we have printed it below for you.
On the same evening, all members of the council voted to declare a climate emergency and commit to taking action to tackle global warming.

Post Box to Heaven
A resident contacted us, to investigate providing a 'post box to heaven' so she and her son could write letters to her dearly loved partner and father of her son. I worked with Anstey Parish Council and with support and funding from Anstey & District Funeral Services Ltd the beautiful post box is now in place in the Anstey cemetery.
Remembrance Sunday
Cllr Baines attended the Charnwood remembrance parade at the Carillon Tower War Memorial in Queen's Park, Loughborough on Sunday 12th November.
It was fantastic to see so many young people from different cadet forces and civic groups like the scouts and the Brownies in the parade and so many residents in attendance in the packed park. Full details of the event and the Mayor's post-event round-up are here: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/remembrance
Anstey Co-Op
We are aware of the new signage that has been erected in the Co-Op car park, which is restricting parking to 90 minutes. We are communicating with the Co-Op about this, but they are reluctant to make any alterations to their new parking policy.
The original planning permission for the store stated the following:
'The car park was to provide 90 spaces for short-stay parking for users of the store and shoppers visiting the village centre – both in the interests of highway safety and to maintain the vitality and viability of the area'.
It therefore does mention 'short-stay parking,’ but we are concerned that 90 minutes is too short for residents visiting the village centre. We have now contacted Charnwood Borough Council to report a breach of planning conditions.
We will keep you updated on this but please be mindful of how long you park in their car park currently.
We have also raised with the Co-Op about the poor condition of the access road into their store. They have confirmed that they are working on making the repairs to the road.
Working at Elections
Charnwood Borough Council is seeking to employ staff to help them deliver successful elections in the borough.
They are looking for enthusiastic and reliable individuals to play a part in the democratic process. There are a variety of roles available to get involved in, listed below.
Although this work is for a very short period of time, ranging from a few hours to a few days at most, commitment to each role is essential to the successful delivery of an election. Therefore, although most vacancies do not require experience, they do require commitment. All appointed staff will be required to sign their agreement to maintain the secrecy of the ballot and must not work on behalf of a candidate during an election campaign or be related to a prospective candidate.
All roles are paid and the rate of pay changes for every election, and this will be confirmed to applicants before allocating them to a role.
- Roles available
- Polling station staff
- Presiding officer
- Poll clerk
- Postal vote openers
- Count staff
- Ballot box handlers
- Overnight count assistants
- Daytime count assistants.
To apply for any of the roles below, please complete the online form: https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/apply_to_work_at_local_elections
Broadband
Some residents could benefit from cut-price broadband. The Government is supporting people with their household bills by working with providers to offer social tariffs to those struggling to afford broadband or phone services.

We would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.
